When I first sat down to type my bio for the trip, I intended
to find the perfect quote to cast light both on who I am and on
why I joined the expedition. Upon further reflection, I decided
that others' words of wisdom were simply unnecessary. I'll do
my best to give a good, if brief, look at where I've been, what
I love, and where I'm headed.
The Pacific Northwest has provided a beautiful backdrop for the
first 23 years of my life. My parents were both educators as I
grew up, which gave me a deep appreciation and hunger for learning,
as well as a childlike curiosity I retain to this day. I recently
graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham, with
a B.A. in Outdoor Parks & Recreation and Political Science. After
graduation, I realized life's purpose cannot be gleaned from a
book or a lecture.
Confused about life and unsure of the future, I left Washington
on a solo adventure of self-discovery. Along the way, I realized
that life isn't meant to be "figured out," and that a definite
itinerary isn't needed, as long as I am conscious of who I am
and what is important. One might wonder what these important things
are, like I did as the mountains and canyons flashed by my window
and the snow and rock moved beneath my boots. Short answer for
me: family, good friends, climbing, an open, accepting, critical
mind, wilderness, humor, social justice, learning, traveling,
discovery, freedom, love, and fun. I thank my parents, family,
educators (Jim, Jill, Charlie, Ron, Tim), best friends (Andy,
Brian, Isaac, Trace, Geoff), and Uncle Jim for helping me to understand
the essentials.
I joined the Achieve Your Dreams Expedition for a few reasons.
I passionately support all endeavors that give youth a better
chance at dreaming big, good dreams. The focus on such organizations
as benefactors of the expedition lies close to my heart. I appreciate
all the support I've gotten and know I wouldn't be who I am today
without it. I also enjoy adventure and when Geoff and I started
talking about the trip, I fell in love with the idea of kayaking
for such a great distance. Lastly, I am convinced that life is
all about the journey and the people we meet along the wayÉI look
forward to spending time with Geoff, Woody, and Dave, as well
as all the new faces between Montana and Louisiana.
So where am I headed? Currently, I am working as a crew leader
for the Youth Conservation Corps in Yellowstone N.P. Then a quick
jaunt with Andy into the Wind Rivers, followed by the long paddle.
After the expedition: a big question markÑmaybe a Masters in Secondary
Education... Law School... travels... climbing... writing...
I've become comfortable with figuring that all out as I go.
